Sao Paulo’s ace keeper undergoes surgery
January 28th, 2012 - 8:05 pm ICT by IANSRio de Janeiro, Jan 28 (IANS) Sao Paulo’s veteran goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni successfully underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, the club confirmed.
The team captain promised that his injury would not lead him into early retirement.
Ceni was injured during team practice Jan 15. Despite attempting various methods of treatment, surgery was the last option. Sergio Schubert performed the surgery, claiming it a success, Xinhua reported.
However, the player needs an estimated six month recovery period before returning to pitch.
Sao Paulo declared that they are extending the 39-year-old’s contract that expires at the end of the 2012 season for another year.
In his 1,016 games with Sao Paulo, Ceni has scored 103 goals, holding the record for most goals scored by a goalkeeper. He also holds records for most penalty kicks scored (47 goals) and most goals scored off free kicks (56 goals) by a goalie.
