Santosh Trophy: Goa, Punjab in semis

Kolkata, Aug 3 (IANS) Title holders Goa and eight time champions Punjab blew away their rivals to romp into the semifinals of the 64th Santosh Trophy football championship here Tuesday.
Goa sped past Services 4-0 while Punjab coasted to a 5-1 victory over Karnataka in Group A quarterfinal matches at the Salt Lake stadium. With nine points from three outings, Goa finished atop the group and would now clash against the runners up from group B.

Punjab went to the last four as the second team from the group with six points. Goa went into the lead as early as the seventh minute as Milagres Gonsalve found the target. The Goans doubled the margin in the 14th minute with Milagres scoring again as Services seemed completely in the woods.

The Goan onslaught continued in the second half as they struck through Adil Khan and substitute Clifton Gonsalves in the one-sided tie. Punjab, on the other hand, dominated the show from the start to the finish. Gurpreet Singh scored twice in the initial minutes before Karnataka’s R.C. Prakash reduced the margin in the 42nd minute. The scoreline read 3-1 in the 66th minute as Praveen Kumar finished off a Ravinder Singh centre.

Late in the session, Kumar got his second goal with a pile driver before Rohit Kumar added to Karnata’s misery.
