Kolkata, Nov 17 (IANS) Sanaa Bhambri booked her place in the pre quarter finals, prevailing over compatriot Isha Lakhani in straight sets at the Gujarat NRE Coke $50,000 ITF Women’s Challenger tennis tournament here Monday.Bhambri, a wild card entry, took 88 minutes to beat Lakhani 6-4, 7-5 on the synthetic surface at the Bengal Tennis Association Complex.
She pocketed the first set in 29 minutes utilising the solitary break in the second game. In the second set, Lakhani broke Bhambri in the tenth game but was herself broken in the seventh and eleventh games to bow out 5-7.
Wild card Rushmi Chakravarthi was the first Indian casualty in the opening round, going down to Thailand’s Suchanan Viratprasert 4-6, 1-6.
Another Indian to disappoint was Ankita Bhambri, who lost tamely to eighth seeded Kai-Chen Chang from Chinese Taipei 2-6, 2-6 in 61 minutes.
In the opening set, the Indian dropped serve in the fourth, sixth and eighth games, while breaking her rival in the fifth.
The second went the same way as Bhambri was broken in the second, fourth and eighth games and Chang lost her serve in the third game.
Sophie Ferguson of Australia won a thriller against Brazilian Vivian Segnini in 136 minutes 6-4, 7-5.
The first set went to Sophie who broke Vivian in the first, third and seventh games while failing to retain serve in the second.
The second set saw a see-saw battle. Sophie went up 3-0 breaking Vivian in the first and third games. Thereafter, Vivian made it 3-3 breaking Sophie in the fourth and sixth games.
The opponents traded breaks in the seventh and eighth games to run neck and neck at 4-4. Vivian retained her serve in the ninth, before Sophie survived three break points in the tenth and went on to demolish Vivian in the eleventh to lead 6-5.
Despite serving two double faults, Sophie kept her serve in the twelfth despite serving two double faults to take the set and move on to the last 16.
