butler1Apr 24, (THAINDIAN NEWS) It seems that A.J. Smith was in no mood to miss the chance of acquiring linebacker Donald Butler this season. The General Manager of the San Diego Chargers on the second day of the NFL Draft went for a quick trade to move up in the draft. He traded to the San Francisco 49ers a 2010 sixth-round pick and a 2011 Fourth-round pick to move up to the third round’s 12 spot to acquire Donald Butler. It seems that the A.J.Smith had many things working in his mind as he went up to acquire Donald Butler as the player has some good personal career records which go in favor of his new team.

Donald Butler has remained a team captain and has leadership qualities. The linebacker in the last season started 12 games and had managed, 94 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and 15.5 TFLs. Donald Butler has shown better coverage skill in both man-to-man and zone. His caliber according to some sports analyst is greater than many of the San Diego Charger’s present inside linebackers. This will no doubt give Donald Butler an opportunity to work hard to gain playing time in the nickel defense.

The San Diego Chargers Director of Player Personnel Jimmy Raye after the pick mentioned to the media that the management wanted to include in the team some of the players from the NFL Draft and it did not take the risk of waiting for them to fall on their lap and thus made the needed trade. He related the Friday move to that of done in the Ryan Mathews situation and said that A.J. Smith did not want to take a chance.
