marathon1 Chicago, Oct 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Sammy Wanjiru has successfully won the Chicago Marathon again this year, defending the title he won last year. The runner clocked 2:06:24 to clinch the title.

The race was run under very hot conditions with the athletes perspiring under the high temperatures.

As expected, participants were divided into the contenders and pretenders shortly after the start with a small group of eight runners taken the lead.

The runners showed early signs of threatening the race record but high temperature meant doing so was going to be near impossible, as they slowed down by the halfway point.

After the first 13 miles, the winner Wanjiru, Tsegaye Kedebe, Vincent Kipruto, Deriba Merga, Robert Kiprono, Feyisa Lilesa and Laban Molben were all in contention for the title but after the first 18 miles Kedebe and Wanjiru proved too strong for the others.

With just two miles to go, it looked like Kedebe had won the race easily but Wanjiru and Lilea applied sustained pressure on him and with just half a mile to go, Wanjiru reached for the extra power and passed Kedebe.

He sustained his lead to win the race at a time that is les than a minute from the record time he set at the same race last year.

Kadebe and Lilesa completed the race later in that order.
