Sahara India group launches sports awards

Mumbai, Oct 27 (IANS) Sahara India group, in collaboration with the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI), Tuesday launched the Sahara Indian Sports Award to felicitate outstanding sportspersons in various disciplines.
The awards, which would also recognise the contribution of the unsung sports coaches, officials and administrators, will be presented at a gala ceremony Nov 9, cricket legend and chairman of the selectors’ jury Sunil Gavaskar said Tuesday.
The initial nominations would be made by the SJFI which would then go on to a jury consisting of eminent personalities from different fields. The entire selection process will be audited and monitored by KPMG.
Already sponsoring cricket and hockey, the Sahara India group this year adopted boxing, wrestling, archery and shooting.
Besides these, Sahara will provide support to a total of 56 sportsmen in the four disciplines until after London Olympics 2012.
