New Delhi, June 21 (IANS) India’s Ratnika Batra rallied to take out fourth-seeded compatriot Ashvarya Shrivastava 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round of the $10,000 ITF women’s tournament at the DLTA complex here Tuesday.

After an erratic first set, that saw a couple of break exchanges, Ratnika fought back to make it set-all as Ashvarya slumped to a stream of errors.

Ashvarya, who took a medical break after the second set, played well in flashes but lacked the consistency to press home the advantage.

Ratnika next plays compatriot Nidhi Chilumula, who shocked Australian Lauren Breadmore 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

In the biggest upset of the day, second-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi of India was shocked by Austrian Patricia Haas 0-6, 1-6. Haas next plays Indian wildcard Rutuja Bhosale who defeated Eetee Maheta 6-3, 6-2.

Third seed Nadia Abdala of Mexico also went down 4-6, 5-7 to Desiree Bastianon of Belgium. Bastianon next plays India’s Rishika Sunkara.

India’s Souwjanya Bavisetti gave good fight to top seed Keren Shlomo of Israel but lacked the patience to consolidate on her good work and lost 3-6, 5-7.

Eighth seed Prerna Bhambri hardly broke sweat during her 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gopika Kapoor. She next plays Jung-Yoon Shin of South Korea.

Last week’s winner Zhaoxuan Yang of China continued to stamp her class, outplaying India’s Ankita Raina 6-2, 6-0.
