Royals go to court over termination of IPL contract
October 25th, 2010 - 5:23 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Rajasthan Royals Monday confirmed they have filed a legal petition against the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to terminate their franchise agreement.
The contract of Rajasthan Royals, winners in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, was terminated last Sunday by the BCCI alleging that the franchise had changed its shareholding pattern without the consent of the board or the IPL governing council.
Royals, however, have denied the BCCI charge.
“We have tried to meet with the BCCI to understand the basis for the termination, which was received without notice. We do not understand what we have done wrong, and it is therefore our duty to the fans of the IPL, our employees, our players and our partners to pursue the matter,” a Rajasthan Royals spokesperson said in a statement Monday.
“The matter is expected to be listed for hearing Wednesday. We would not like to state anything further since the matter is sub judice,” the statement added.
BCCI had also terminated the contract of Kings XI Punjab on similar grounds.
Royals and Kings XI still have seven years of their 10-year contract to run out.
