Bangalore, Oct 13 (IANS) Jacques Kallis put up an all-round performance to guide Bangalore Royal Challengers to the second round of the Champions League Twenty20 with a 80-run win over Otago Volts at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here Monday.
Chasing a victory target of 189 runs, the New Zealand side were all out for 108 runs in 17.5 overs.
Kallis was the key player in Challengers’ win, smashing an unbeaten 73 runs and taking three wickets to take the Indian Premier League team to the next stage.
Royal Challengers had lost the first match to Cape Cobras but after Monday’s win joined Cobras from Group C in the league stage.
Electing to bat, Bangalore top order put an impressive performance with the veteran South African anchoring the innings.
Opening the innings, Kallis (73 off 59 balls) and Robin Uthappa (42) struck 75 runs in 59 balls. Uthappa hit five fours and two sixes before falling to Aaron Redmond.
Kallis then batted with Virat Kohli (32) and Ross Taylor (32 not out) to put up an imposing total. Kallis struck four fours and two sixes.
Taylor hit three sixes and a boundary off Ian Buttler, smashing 24 runs in the last over of the innings.
After the show with the bat, Kallis (3/18) bowled an impressive spell to wreck the Kiwi top-order.
Kallis took two wickets in the second over, removing Brendon McCullum and Redmond within a space of three balls.
Skipper Anil Kumble (2/20) and R. Vinay Kumar (2/20) joined the party, as Otaga batsmen fell at regular interval.
Kumble trapped Nathan McCullum (8) and Butler (1) in successive overs to dash any hopes of comeback for Otaga.
