Fayetteville, Nov. 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Rotnei Clarke of the Arkansas scored two records in the game against Alcorn State that was held on Friday night. The shooter from Claremore University of Oklahoma scored 51 points, more than any other Razorback had ever scored before him, and basketed enough three pointer shots to create a new record. In fact, he had shot 13 three pointers in the basket. Arkansas did win an impressive victory, but there is serious doubt whether it would have been half as spectacular if Clarke had not managed to put up such a spectacular show.
Arkansas won 130-68 in the opening match of the season against Alcorn State. Of the 68, 51 points were scored by Rotnei alone. He also scored 13 of the 17 three pointer baskets that were shot from behind the arc and 15 of the 21 in a whole. His performance set new records. His 51 points broke the record of Martin Terry, who scored 47 points against SMU in 1973. The position of the highest three pointers scorer was taken away from Al Dillard, and it also created a SEC record. Clarke broke both the records at the same moment, with only 5 minutes and 32 seconds left of the game. The game was then stopped for awhile and he received a standing ovation from the spectators and players alike.
The spectators of the game and his coach and team mates could not praise him enough. They were unanimous in their laudatory phrases. Everyone agreed that Clarke had delivered an outstanding performance. Even the coach of Alcorn State could not help but agree that the player “was on fire”. He admitted that when Clarke was in such form, it would require a lot of resistance and the opponent obviously did not offer it.
