London, July 16(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set to begin talks on a new five-year, 36.4 million pound deal with the Red Devils before the start of the season.
According to reports, Rooney, who is currently on a holiday in Barbados, and United chief executive David Gill will hold a meeting to negotiate the mega contract after July 28.
The 140,000 pounds-a-week agreement will make him the best-paid player in Old Trafford history, The Sun reports.
The 24-year-old is likely to sign the new contract before his team’s league opener against Newcastle United next month.
Rooney currently has a 90,000 pound-a-week deal, which expires in June 2012.
Securing last season’s 34-goal top scorer on a long-term deal is regarded as crucial by manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the club’s owners, the Glazer family. (ANI)
