Rooney not distracted by red-hot form acclaim
February 18th, 2010 - 1:00 pm ICT by ANILondon, Feb 18(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admits that he is flattered by all the praise for his form this season, but said it will mean little to him if his club finishes empty-handed at the end.
Rooney has scored 17 goals in his past 17 games, and could match Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable haul of 42 from 2007-08. He has 25 goals in the Premier League so far, and 19 games left if United go all the way to the Champions League final.
“I’m not really focusing on what people are saying about me at the minute. I’m just trying to focus on playing well,” The Daily Express quoted Rooney, as saying.”Of course, if people say nice things about you, then that’s good. But I don’t really listen too much because I know I’ve got to keep doing it,” he added.
The 24-year-old also refused to reveal a target, and said: “I honestly don’t know how many I can score. Hopefully I’ll just keep on scoring. I am delighted to score twice in such a big game in the San Siro and it was a great result.”
Most of Rooney’s goals this season have come from inside the penalty area and he admits that he is reaping the benefit of spending last summer working on his heading. “I am getting inside the box a lot more and that’s helping me score goals, which gives you confidence. That’s the main thing I’ve worked on, so it has been worthwhile,” Rooney said.”It’s not just about me, though. The team has improved a lot over the last few months. We have been more consistent in our performances and we have been getting the results we need and that has definitely helped me with my game,” he added. (ANI)
