Rooney hopes to break his scoring record to bridge post- Ronaldo Man U goal gap
November 21st, 2009 - 3:47 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )London, Nov 21 (ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is determined to post his highest goals tally this season to prove that there is no vacuum at the club after Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid.
Ronaldo scored 68 goals in his final two seasons at Manchester United and Rooney admitted that the pressure is now on him to match those extraordinary exploits.
Rooney’s best-ever goal return remains 23, but with eight already this season and now installed as United’s penalty taker, he claimed he could set a new personal record.
“Having lost Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, myself and the other forwards have to step up to the plate and score more goals. Hopefully, with the way I’ve started the season, I’ll end up with my best scoring total for United,” The Mirror quoted Rooney, as saying.
Despite his impressive start to the season, Rooney scored just once in his last seven games for United, but warned he is ready to go on one of his trademark burst of goals.
“I’ve always scored in bursts throughout my career. I want to become more consistent and start scoring on a more regular basis. We’ve had to adjust and try to play a different way without Ronaldo. Other players have to fill the gap he’s left,” said Rooney.
“Hopefully, by the end of the season, we’ll have proved we can cope without him by carrying on winning trophies,” he added. (ANI)
