London, Oct 22 (IANS) Minutes before Wayne Rooney extended his contract at Manchester United by another five years, fans from Old Trafford gathered at the footballer’s home threatening dire consequences if he decided to join rival club Manchester City.
Before Rooney decided to stay at Manchester United and end all speculations on his future in the club, Rooney released a statement Wednesday that he wanted to leave Old Trafford. He expressed concern that the club was in danger of stagnating at a time when they no longer appear to be in a position to sign the more expensive players on the market, the Guardian reported.
Around 40 fans clad in balaclavas and hooded tops and holding a banner “If you join City you are dead”, travelled to his Prestbury home to warn him off any move to Manchester City, the report said.
Manager and coach Alex Ferguson had earlier said that he will put the controversial issue to bed by Thursday and Rooney will commit the biggest mistake of his professional life if chooses to move from Old Trafford.
Rooney eventually agreed on 1,80,000 pounds a week contract with the management, making him the best paid player in the history of the club.
