London, Oct. 21 (ANI): Star striker Wayne Rooney has been branded a “whore” by furious fans after he confirmed he is quitting Manchester United.
Some Red Devils’ supporters unfurled banners at Old Trafford taunting the striker over his hooker shame.
According to The Sun, one message said: “Who’s the whore now Wayne?”
Alongside, more fans held aloft another banner saying: “Coleen forgave you. We won’t.”
The jibe was a reference to the player’s wife allowing a reconciliation despite Rooney cheating on her while she was pregnant.
Some of the crowd at the Stretford End even chanted “You Scouse bastard” during United’s 1-0 Champions League win against Bursaspor.
Rooney, injured in training on Tuesday, was not on the pitch to face the onslaught.
He had delivered a bombshell statement two hours before the game, explaining why he is going.
The 24-year-old striker blasted club owners — the Glazers — for not pumping enough money into the club to match his own ambition.
But he hailed team manager Sir Alex Ferguson despite their recent “difficulties”.
Rooney, who had talks with club chief executive David Gill last week, said: “He did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad. I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract.”
The England star suggested he was surprised Ferguson said he failed to respect Manchester United.
His statement insisted: “I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done, given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part? For me it’s all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex.”
He further said: “For Manchester United’s sake I wish he could go on forever because he’s a one-off and a genius.”
Rooney could be sold in January, sparking a bidding war between Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. (ANI)
