Rooney backs Terry’s return as England captain

London, Mar 20(ANI): England striker Wayne Rooney has welcomed John Terry’s return as captain after admitting that he is “far too young” for the job himself.

Terry was relieved of his duties in February 2010 after reports surfaced that he had an affair with the former partner of England teammate Wayne Bridge.

“It’s a massive thing to captain your country. I’ve done it once and it’s something I will never forget. It’s down to the manager who he picks as captain and there is nothing we can do to influence it,” the Daily Express quoted Rooney, as saying.

“As captain you have to shout and be a leader. But I have said many times that John Terry is a massive leader for us, even when he is not captain. I don’t really think about being England captain. It would be a great honour for me but I think I am way too young,” he added.

The 25-year-old further reiterated that their 2010 World Cup campaign was “a disaster”, but he is enjoying his football again.

“We have come back and done quite well in the qualifying games,” Rooney said.

“We will start as favourites against Wales. We are expected to win and as players we expect to win. It will be a difficult game and there will be a great atmosphere,” he added. (ANI)
