Rome, May 19 (IANS/AKI) AS Roma’s new American owner may bring a top US player to the Italian capital to play for the club he recently acquired.

Thomas DiBenedetto told American soccer website MLSsoccer.com that he intends to purchase an American player in this summer’s transfer market.

“We are obviously scouting players everywhere and we are obviously interested in the American products, both in MLS (Major League Soccer) and abroad,” DiBenedetto has told MLSsoccer.com from Rome.

“I obviously can’t tell you any names, but we want only the best for our team.”

DiBenedetto’s Roma acquisition is due to be approved at the end of the month. He will become the club’s president June 10.

An investor group led by DiBenedetto - part owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team - in March became the first American owner of a team in Italy’s storied top Serie A league when it agreed to purchase a controlling stake in Roma.

Roma founded in 1927, last won the Serie A title in 2001.
