Roger Clemens trial to begin on Wednesday
July 11th, 2011 - 8:43 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, July 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The defense and the prosecution teams involved in the federal perjury trial of Roger Clemens are expected to give their opening statements at this week. Jury selection will start on Monday and it will mark the start of the trial.
18 prospective jurors have been lined up for selection. Final jury will be made up of 12 jurors and four alternates. The jury selection will be supervised by Judge Reggie Walton. The trial will take place at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Aside perjury, Clemens also faces the charges of obstruction of Congress and giving false statements. The charges stem from the statement that he gave during a Congressional hearing in 2008 regarding the use of performance enhancing drugs.
When Clemens appeared before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Feb. 13, 2008, Clemens denied using steroids. During his career, Clemens won 354 games over a period of 23 seasons.
The prosecutors are relying heavily on the testimony that Brian McNamee will give. McNamee was the former personal trainer of Clemens and he told the 2008 Congressional committee that he has personally injected Clemens with performance enhancing drugs.
Clemens could be sentenced to 30 years if he is found guilty of all the charges.
