Melbourne, Jan.1 (ANI): Coach Larry Stefanki strongly believes Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick is one of 10 players who can win this year’s Australian Open and end Roger Federer’s domination of the game.
‘There’s no lock (certainty) any more there’s no Roger Show any more. They are all thinking the same thing and that’s what I love about the men’s tennis game at the moment. Andy is as good a chance as anybody and that’s what I keep telling him,” the Courier Mail quoted Stefanki, as saying.
‘He got awfully close at Wimbledon. It’s in the history books, but it’s time to get back to the grindstone. He’s the top seed and he’ll be a little nervous I suspect, this court is conducive to fitness it’s a great surface for him,’ he added.
Stefanki said the world No. 7 had come to Brisbane as the fittest he had seen him despite his three-month tournament layoff.
Roddick considers himself a legitimate Australian Open contender, as well as one at Wimbledon and the US Open.
‘He’s right to think that there are eight or 10 guys who can win this thing (Australian Open) if they are ready and fit enough,’ Stefanki said.
Meanwhile, Roddick intends to play enough tournaments in 2010 to rack up enough points to press for the No. 1 ranking, but winning his second Grand Slam title remains his target.
‘It’s been the same goal for a long time, trying to win another Grand Slam,’ said Roddick, who won his one major title at the 2003 US Open. (ANI)
