oakriotsOakland, California, July 9, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Mehserle verdict was given on Thursday as hundreds of protesters gathered near the Oakland City Hall in the evening. In spite of the authorities fearing violence and taking adequate steps, the demonstrations turned violent after dusk as protesters started looting shops and attacking the police. The protesters felt that the verdict had lack of justice. More than 50 arrests have been made by the police in Oakland and latest reports suggests that the numbers might go up. 15 other agencies have stepped up to assist the police to restore peace in the city.

Johannes Mehserle was convicted for involuntary manslaughter and might face up 2 to 4 years in prison and even more because of the involvement of a gun in the crime. The trial of Johannes Mehserle became one of the most sensitive trials in Oakland because it involved the killing of a black man by a white cop. The case attained a racial color after the videos of the crime scene showed that Oscar Grant III was shot at by Johannes Mehserle while he was face down on the ground.

Major League Baseball had warned the Los Angeles Angels of the riot scenario in Oakland due to the sensitive Mehserle trial verdict on Thursday. The authority warned the team’s travel official about the situation and also offered extra security to the Los Angeles Angels team that arrived late Thursday in Oakland. Los Angeles Angels coach Mike Scioscia said that he is aware of the tension that the verdict has created but his team will continue to play baseball. The team is scheduled to take a bus to the Oakland Coliseum from a California hotel.
