Rio de Janeiro to host 2016 Olympic Games
October 3rd, 2009 - 12:00 am ICT by IANSCopenhagen, Oct 2 (DPA) Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games. Rio beat off the challenges of Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago in a vote by International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegates at the IOC Session in Copenhagen Friday.
The Brazilian city won after the third and final round of voting in the International Olympic Council.
Chicago was eliminated in the first round, and Tokyo went out in the second.
It will be the first Olympics in South America. The 2016 Games will come barely two years after Brazil hosts the 2014 football World Cup.
