Copenhagen, Oct 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) It is a moment to dance to the beats of samba for the people of Rio de Janeiro as it was announced that Rio has been selected to host the prestigious 2016 Olympic games. Thousands flocked into Copacabana beach on Friday, anxiously waiting for the announcement to be made regarding the venue of the 2016 Olympic games. As soon as it was announced that Rio has been chosen as the venue to host Summer Olympics, a stunned silence gripped the mass which was followed by a deafening roar of thunder.
On Friday the International Olympic Committee declared that Rio de Janeiro would be hosting the game thereby making it the first South American city to gain such heights. The selection of Rio over its competitors which includes Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid, ignited the celebration in this Brazilian city. The joyous celebration was marked with cheers, hugs and typical Latin American style dance. The early exit of Chicago from the bid proved to be a boon for the city who couldn’t believe that they have been awarded to host the 2016 Olympics.
“I say with all frankness: That our time has come,” said president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who seemed to be proud for the great achievement which will be written down in the history books. After the voting process finished a highly emotional Luiz, who battled it hard to control his tears said, “I confess to you that if I died now my life would have been worthwhile.”
This achievement comes as a booster for the Latin American nations who now believe that the future now lies within their grasp.
