Riley SheahanDetroit, June 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Notre Dame center Riley Sheahan was drafted by Detroit Red Wings as the 21st pick in the NHL draft on Friday. Reportedly, Detroit Red Wings had drafted for a forward Friday night in the first round itself. This is the first ever forward Friday draft by Detroit Red Wings since 1992.

Detroit Red Wings Assistant General Manager Jim Nill was a happy man after announcing the name of Riley Sheahan on Friday. He was extremely elated and referred Riley Sheahan as the “big, strong center man” who he feels can act as “a power forward” for the team.

Jim Nill further said that Riley Sheahan is a two way player and he could be a real asset to the team. Undoubtedly the draft results has been a boon for Riley Sheahan whose off season had the cops arresting him on public intoxication charges. It was said that Riley Sheahan could appear for a pre-trial diversion program and some extensive community service following which the charges were dropped. As a matter of fact, a majority of the scouting networks were a little skeptical of Riley Sheahan’s ability as a game maker despite of the fact that he has been one of the most sought after goal scorers before he started playing for Notre Dame.

Jim Nill said that Riley Sheahan was the only one and perhaps the most youngest pick ever by Detroit Red Wings. Apart from him, there were also two other local selections in the first round of NHL draft namely Windsor defenseman Cam Fowler and Ann Arbor forward Austin Watson.

Cam Fowler was picked up by Anaheim Ducks while Austin Watson was drafted by Nashville Predators as the 18th pick.
