Ridder takes charge as East Bengal coach
November 10th, 2009 - 12:35 am ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 9 (IANS) Taking charge as East Bengal’s new football coach, Belgian Philippe de Ridder Monday said he was taking his “tough” assignment as a challenge.
Ridder, who was earlier East Bengal coach in 2005, said: “The last time I was new to East Bengal. This time there are lot of expectations on me. So this year my work will be tough and challenging too.”
Under de Ridder, East Bengal had been on course for the National League title but ultimately finished runners-up to Mahindra United. They, however, won the Super Cup.
This time, East Bengal are occupying the eighth position in the league table with nine points in their kitty from seven games.
After a poor start, the side has won its last two matches against Viva Kerala and Air India.
Asked whether his side was in good shape, Ridder replied: “It is not in a good shape. It is in better shape. Now I want to take down notes.”
Ridder, who arrived in the city this morning, said he coached in Bulgaria, Ecuador and his country Belgium since the time he left India after his maiden stint with East Bengal.
Asked how his team would be affected with the national team slated to play a series of tourneys this year, the Belgian said: “If seven-eight footballers go for a national duty, it is hard to cope with such a situation. But if two-three go, it’s ok.”
Ridder’s first test will be the home tie against newly promoted Lajong Nov 12.
