Resolve tenure issue within the country: M.S. Gill
May 22nd, 2010 - 10:51 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 22 (IANS) Sports Minister M.S Gill Saturday said the issue of fixing the tenure and age-limit of the office bearers of sports bodies should be settled within the country.
Gill’s reply came after the the International Olympic Commitee (IOC) held out a veiled threat in its second such letter to the sports ministry that the country’s apex sports body would face “sanctions” if the government did not stop meddling in the affairs of the sports bodies by fixing the tenure and age-limit of their office bearers.
The IOC had intervened in the ongoing battle between the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the ministry over restitution of the 1975 government guidelines that limited the tenure of office bearers of the IOA and its affiliated National Sports Federations (NSFs).
Asked whether IOC’s repeated warning is a harassment for the mininstry, Gill, said: “These things should not happen. We should resolve the issue within the country.”
“This is not a new guideline. The government has not issued any new order. We have only revived the 1975 guidelines. The IOA should also respect the opinion of the people,” he added.
IOA president Suresh Kalmadi said that they are ready to sort out the issue with the ministry.
“The time has come for us to should sit together and discuus the issue. I am ready to talk to the sports minister,” Kalmadi said.
