Redknapp calls for ’sicko’ racist abusers to be put behind bars
September 26th, 2009 - 12:17 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )London, Sep 26(ANI): Ahead of the Premier League game between Tottenham and Burnley on Saturday, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said that fans who hurl abuses at players and those who are found guilty of racist chants should be jailed.
Redknapp comments came after Blackpool midfielder Jason Euell was subjected to racist abuse during Tuesday’s Carling Cup game against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
Though, Stoke City officials have apologised for their supporter’s behaviour and confirmed that they will ‘impose the toughest possible sanctions’ on a supporter accused of racial abuse, Redknapp said: “Anything like that is disgusting. There’s no place in the game for that. We can’t have that sort of behaviour; anyone who does that should be put in prison, not banned from football. Put them where they belong, in the nuthouse.”
“I came in as a player at West Ham and we had it every week because we had Clyde Best who was the only black player. It was disgusting. A fantastic fellow, a great player. But, those days are over, surely to God,” The Telegraph quoted Redknapp, as saying.
Redknapp further said that other forms of abuse were bad as well, and all this would significantly damage the image of the game.
“There is other stuff that goes on that is sick, you hear things and chants that just turn me over, things I can’t believe. You’ve got to be some sort of nutter to do that,” Redknapp said.
“It’s not banter, it’s sick, they’re sickos. They’ve got to be locked up, put them away, don’t come back to football,” he added. (ANI)
