New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) Saurashtra’s emphatic win over Punjab by an innings and 144 runs was the lone result in the third round of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division matches that concluded Sunday.

Mumbai’s Abhishek Nayar scored a valiant 191 not out but his side couldn’t prevent Karnataka from ending with a sizeable first innings lead in the drawn fixture at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Railways and Haryana ended their matches with a first innings lead.

At the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali, Punjab’s innings folded-up for 120 while following on and chasing Saurashtra’s 542.

Saving the match was a herculean task for Punjab, who were trailing by 220 runs with six wickets in hand before the start of the final day’s play. And the home team succumbed rather quickly after resuming the innings on 44 for four. Punjab had made 278 in the first innings.

Saurashtra’s left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat took eight wickets in the match including six on day two while Sandip Maniar bagged four in Punjab’s second innings. The visitors got six points for the huge victory and are now at fourth place in Group A standings. Punjab have dropped to fifth.

In another Group A match, Nayar waged a lone battle for Mumbai against Karnataka as he scored his second hundred in as many matches. The hosts, chasing 635, were all out for 441 after resuming on 354 for 8. Karnataka were 147 for three in the second innings when stumps were called. Manish Pandey and Amit Verma were their stars in the first innings, hitting 200 and 173 respectively. Karnataka got three points in the draw and now lead the Group while Mumbai, who got one, are second.

In Group B, Delhi batted better in the second innings to ensure a draw against Tamil Nadu at the Ferozshah Kotla here. The home team’s effort of 212 on the opening day meant they were doing the catching up for the remainder of the match but a total of 311 in the second innings got them the unlikely result.

Tamil Nadu were 129 for three at close of play, getting three points for the first innings score of 306. They are second in Group B behind Baroda, who conceded first innings lead to Haryana in a drawn match at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Baroda.

Goa, Maharashtra and Hyderabad registered wins in the Plate Division, defeating Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Assam respectively.
