Ranji Trophy: Jaffer props up Mumbai innings

Chennai, Dec 9 (IANS) An unbeaten 66 by Wasim Jaffer held the Mumbai innings together as the visitors made 180 for four on a truncated second day against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match here Thursday.

In all, 57 overs were bowled after the match began following the lunch break, as the city recovered from a spell of heavy rains earlier this week and the Tamil Nadu bowlers put to good use the conditions after Mumbai won the toss and elected to bat first.

After the openers Sahil Kukreja and Onkar Gurav departed early, Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane (49) put on 95 runs for the third wicket before the Tamil Nadu bowlers struck twice.

Seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji was the pick of the Tamil Nadu bowlers, claiming two for 17 in 10 overs on a day when batting demanded a bit of circumspection that Jaffer showed in plenty.

With two more days remaining, the match appears to be headed for another draw while the teams would battle it out for the crucial first innings points.
