New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) Gujarat hammered Delhi by an innings and 35 runs while Baroda wrapped up an eight wicket win over Madhya Pradesh on the final day of the Elite Division matches played in the Ranji Trophy.

Last Year’s runners-up Baroda completed the formalities at the Moti Bagh Stadium. The hosts, chasing a meagre 54-run target, took eight balls to score the remaining six runs from their overnight score of 48 for 2.

The star performer for Baroda was medium pacer Irfan Pathan, who took eight wickets in the match including a fifer in Madhya Pradesh’s second innings. Pathan along with Firdaush Bhaja did maximum damage on the opening day when Madhya Pradesh were bundled out for 63. Ambati Rayudu’s 119 and Aditya Waghmode’s 99 in Baroda’s first innings score of 375 were another highlight of the match. The hosts took five points for the emphatic win and are sitting at top of Group B with seven points from two matches.

At Valsad, Delhi were not able to put up much resistance after starting the day at 170 for five, folding up for 252 while following on in the second innings. The visitors had made 233 in the first innings after Gujarat posted a mammoth 520 courtesy a double century by Niraj Patel and a hundred by skipper Parthiv Patel.

The match between Mumbai and Rajasthan ended in a draw with the hosts amassing 625 in reply to 530 posted by the defending champions. Rajasthan were 70 for 2 when play was called off on the fourth day. The batsmen made merry on a placid wicket with Rajasthan’s Hrishikesh Kanitkar striking 141 and Mumbai’s Abhishek Nayyar producing a marathon knock of 243.

Mumbai, with one win in two matches, are second in Group A while Rajasthan are fifth with two points from as many draws.

In Chennai, Tamil Nadu fell short of an outright victory by mere five runs and came away with three points from their drawn match against Haryana.

Requiring 146 for victory in 13 overs after dismissing Haryana for 200 in their second innings, Tamil Nadu made 141 for eight at stumps.

It was touch-and-go for Tamil Nadu as Haryana were all out at the end of the 75th over and it left the hosts only 13 of the 15 mandatory overs to reach the victory target.

Tamil Nadu batsmen, led by opener Dinesh Karthik (55) and Murali Vijay (42) set up a furious pace, but paid the price with four run outs that curtailed the chase even as Haryana hung on grimly to salvage one point.

Tamil Nadu have five points from two outings, the first of which against Baroda last week ended in a draw with over three days rained off. Haryana have two from as many matches.
