Ranganathan shocks second seed in women’s tennis tourney

Gurgaon, June 10 (IANS) Madura Ranganathan emerged giant killer in the $10,000 NTA women’s tennis tournament here Tuesday, upsetting second-seed Thai Nungnadda Wannasuk in the first round. Ranganathan, a wild card entry in the tournament, knocked out Wannasuk 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Other Indian players registered easy victories in their first round matches with top seed Isha Lakhani beating unseeded Shivika Burman 7-5, 6-2.

Third seeded Ankita Bhambri faced little resistance in her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Russian Angelina Gabueva while sister Sanaa, seeded fifth, gave a 6-4, 6-0 mauling to Viet-Ha Ngo of Vietnam.

Fourth seed R. Chakravarthi downed wild card Garima Vatwani 6-2, 6-1.
