Versailles, France, July 2 (IANS) Jyoti Randhawa, one of the early starters in the second round, shot a two-under 69 to move up one place to tied fourth at the halfway stage of the Open de France Friday. The Indian is now six-under 136 for 36 holes and just two behind leader, Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands.
“I am delighted. Anytime you shoot an under-par round, it is good,” said Randhawa, who had a disappointing season before this. “The birdie on the 14th felt good, because that got me one-under and then the birdie after (15th) made it even better, so it was good.”

Of the other Indians, Jeev Milkha Singh shot 73 as he dropped a double bogey on 12th and a bogey on 18th to slip to tied 61st. Shiv Kapur was one-under through 12 holes for the day and at one-under he was tied 31st. S.S.P. Chowrasia had four double bogeys in his 80 and he made an early exit at 11-over.

“If I keep shooting those under par numbers anything can happen, so let’s see. The greens were faster today than yesterday and I misjudged some,” added Randhawa.

On the disappointing season, he said: “I lost my way a bit. It happens in golf. I think I got my swing together and feeling confident.”

Randhawa added, “Although on this course, with one or two bad shots, you can easily end up with a double bogey there are also lots of birdie chances as well. These days out here there are always people who play well.”

Derksen retained his lead despite only shooting a level 71 Friday. Following his 63 Thursday, the 36-year-old Derksen moved five shots clear of the field with successive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes at Le Paris National. They took him to 10 under.

But two bogeys in the second half of his round saw him drop back to 8 under and that left him only two in front of Jyoti Randhawa of India. Randhawa, another early second-round starter, added a 69 to his opening 67.

A little later Derksen headed to watch Netherlands play Brazil where his home team had the better of the five-time champions.

“I did not play that much worse than I did in the first round,” said Derksen before heading off to watch the Netherlands play Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinals.
