Port-of-Spain, Jan 22 (IANS) Queen’s Park Oval, the mecca of Caribbean cricket where Indians like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar have created history, now has a cricket museum with a section devoted to master of the willow Brian Lara.
The museum in this capital of Trinidad and Tobago showcases the history of cricket in the country and in the West Indies from the early 20th century with emphasis on the events that took place at the Oval.
Among the artefacts are an autographed bat of the 1950 West Indies Team that won its first Test over England at Lord’s, the original deed which transferred the present property to the Club and one of the original turnstiles installed in the ground.
The museum received an assistance of $50,000 from the ministry of tourism.
Several Indian cricketers including Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar have created history here. It was at Queen’s Park Oval that calypso musician Lord Realtor created the hit “Sunil Gavaskar - The Master Batsman” that relives his batting spree here in the 1970s.
A feature of the museum is a section highlighting the Brian Lara era, including the bats he used during his world records of 375, 501 not out, 400 not out and a video charting the highlights of his career.
The Queen’s Park Cricket Club was founded in 1981 and has over 3,000 members.
