Quartet to undertake world’s toughest rowing race for charity
May 29th, 2010 - 5:17 pm ICT by ANIEdinburgh, May 29 (ANI): A Scottish climber and a former soldier from Perth are set to take on the elements in a non-stop marathon around Britain which is touted to be the most physically testing rowing race in the world.
The two comprise half of the members of a male team, which will be pitted against a female team for the 2010-mile race.
The marathon is part of an initiative called ‘Help for Heroes’, a charity for injured servicemen and women. The participants are hoping to raise 2,50,000 pounds in the process.
According to The Scotsman, the race for the Virgin Trophy starts from Tower Bridge in London on Tuesday. Sir Richard Branson, the Virgin Group chairman, will meet the competitors beforehand.
The teams will then face some of Britain’s most notorious tides, busy shipping lanes and unpredictable weather, knowing that only one crew has ever successfully rowed non-stop around the country before. (ANI)
