PWD’s clearance procedure clumsy: CAB

Kolkata, Oct 12 (IANS) The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), which is awaiting a state Public Works Department’s (PWD) no objection certificate (NOC) to host an India-England ODI at the Eden Gardens Oct 25, Wednesday dubbed the clearance procedure as “clumsy” and sought support from the state government.

“Kolkata (Eden Gardens) is slated to host several international cricket matches. We are looking for the support from the government. We are following the due procedures and visiting various offices as and when required. But we think there is no need to make the formalities so clumsy. Making them a bit simpler would be appreciated,” CAB joint secretary Biswarup Dey told mediapersons here.

A section of the media Tuesday reported that the state PWD has denied the NOC to CAB for the Oct 25 match.

When contacted, Dey said: “It has not been denied. Earlier, we got the NOC during the World Cup matches organised here. A NOC is valid for one year so where is the need for another one?”

PWD Minister Subrata Bakshi, when asked about the matter, told IANS: “I am not the one concerned to answer this.”

Eden Gardens, considered one of the best stadiums in the world, earlier had to face the ignominy of withdrawal of a cricket World Cup match, also featuring India and England, due to non completion of renovation work within the stipulated time.

England is in India to play five ODIs beginning from Oct 14 in Hyderabad.
