Punjab Gold Cup hockey: India hold Holland 4-4

Chandigarh, Feb 1 (IANS) India scored a 4-4 draw against Holland in their second outing of the Punjab Gold Cup hockey at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here Sunday.After being put on the mat by the Dutch team in most of the first half with a 0-2 score-line, India scored three goals in four minutes just before the first half ended.

Forward Shivender Singh, who was declared man of the match, chipped in with goals in the 29th and 32nd minute. Prabhjot Singh added to the Indian tally with a goal in the 31st minute. At half time, the score line read 3-2 in India’s favour.

Holland earlier dominated the first half with two goals coming in the 16th minute through forward Rob Reckers and the second one through a penalty stroke in the 26th minute by Laurence Docherty.

Hockey lovers, who came to the stadium in good numbers, had a lot of excitement with goals being scored by both sides.

In the 48th minute, Holland skipper Timme Hoyng equalised 3-3 by scoring through a pass from the mid-field. Both sides kept up the pressure in the second half.

Indian skipper Sandeep Singh then failed to convert a penalty stroke.

India took the lead in the 61st minute, with S.V.Sunil scoring a field goal.

Holland levelled the score 4-4 after Geert Jan Derikx hit a rebound of a penalty corner.

Both sides tried their best to force a win but had to settle for a draw in the keenly contested game.
