Melbourne, Jan.15 (ANI): South African cricket captain Johan Botha has said that he plans to exert his authority in Friday’’s first one-day match against Australia at the MCG, but hopes his team-mates are the only ones who notice.
Botha has the tough task of replacing the injured Graeme Smith, and has so far come a cropper with two Twenty20 defeats against Australia.
Adding to his woes, Botha was also twice fined by the International Cricket Council for slow over-rates at the MCG and Gabba.
Australian captain Ricky Ponting has added to the pressure by saying that the Proteas are lacking in leadership.
There appeared to be three or four skippers out on the ground up in Brisbane the other night trying to run and control things,”” Fox Sports quoted Ponting, as saying.
Botha is reported to have told his team mates that he is the one in charge when it comes to setting the field and enforcing bowling changes.
I”ve got some input back from (team-mates) and we”ve spoken about it, not to have too many guys saying too much on the field because it does get a bit crazy at times,”” he said.
Botha is fiercely competitive, and has also vowed to be less demonstrative on the field during the five-match one-day series.
I have to handle myself a bit better and not show so much emotion on the field,”” he said. (ANI)
