New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) India’s Prerna Bhambri overcame mid-match jitters to upset fourth-seeded compatriot Rushmi Chakravarthi in the first round of the $10,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament at the DLTA complex here Tuesday.

Delhi girl Prerna, who reached the quarterfinals at ITF Hyderabad last week, overcame 33-year old Rushmi 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in hot and blustery conditions here.

Rushmi, who reached the quarterfinals at the Hyderabad ITF last week, was sluggish on court and made a stream of errors to crash out in almost two hours. Rushmi struggled to keep up with the pace and power of Prerna’s groundstrokes and her serve lacked the sting.

After trading a string of breaks in the first set, Prerna snatched the decisive one in the ninth game to serve out the set. Rushmi, however, did well to fight back in the second and draw parity.

In the decider, Prerna played solid to go up 4-2 before closing out the set and the match.

She now plays reigning national champion and wildcard Ratnika Batra, who brushed aside Jiayuan Xue of China 6-3, 6-2.

In another first round match, fifth-seeded Ashvarya Shrivastava had to dig deep against Pia Konig before carving out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win in a marathon three hours and 13 minutes. Ashvarya next plays Su Jeong Jang of South Korea who dispatched compatriot So-Ra Lee 7-5, 6-2.

In contrast, top seeded Fatma Al Nabhani of Oman had it easy against India’s Megha Sehrawat, advancing 6-4, 6-2. She next plays Briton Manisha Foster.

Third-seed Keren Shlomo of Israel barely broke sweat in her 6-2, 6-2 victory over India’s Zainab Ali Sajjad. She next plays another Indian Rishika Sunkara who beat diminutive Japanese Sanae Ohta 6-3, 6-4.
