Prakash Amritraj aced out by Sam Querrey

July 11th, 2009 - 9:12 pm ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

Newport, July 11 (IANS) Indian wildcard Prakash Amritraj, runner-up here last year, is knocked out of the Hall of Fame tennis tournament in three sets.
Prakash lost to big-serving third seed American Sam Querrey after winning the first-set tie-breaker, 7-6(7), 3-6, 2-6, in the $442,500 event here Friday.

Querrey belted 31 aces as Prakash, the first Indian to make the final at an Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) Tour event in a decade last year, could not handle the serve.

The Indian was a victory away from emulating his father as the only second son to win a title here, Taylor Dent being the first to win after his father Phil. Prakash’s father Vijay had won at Newport thrice, in 1976, 80 and 84.

The American later in the day won his quarter-final match against compatriot Kevin Kim 6-3, 6-4.

Querrey next meets two-time defending champion Fabrice Santoro, who defeated fellow-Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
