Prakash achieves carear-high singles ranking

New Delhi, July 14 (IANS) In a successful week for India’s men tennis players, Prakash Amritraj riding on his final appearance at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship moved up 101 places on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) charts Monday to achieve his career-high singles ranking of 204. Prakash, who last week became first Indian in a decade since Leander Paes to reach an ATP semi-final, was 305th before he entered the tournament as a wild card.

Prakash’s close friend Rohan Bopanna, whom he beat in quarterfinals, too jumped 95 places to be 279th. Bopanna before his stint at Newport had reached the semi-final of Manchester Challenger.

Prakash, who along with Gilles Muller from Luxembourg reached the doubles quarter-finals, leapfrogged 88 places to be ranked at 365th position in the doubles rankings.

Bopanna, however, with his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Quereshi reached the doubles finals at Newport which resulted in him achieving his career-high doubles ranking of 43, after moving six places.

Meanwhile, veterans Mahesh Bhupathi (12) and Leander Paes (15) retained their doubles rankings.

Sania Mirza too remained static at her last week’s singles ranking of 33 as per the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
