Bhubaneswar, Oct 15 (IANS) Ranu Mohanty, a reputed powerlifter, Wednesday said she may skip the World Championships in Canada in November because of the lack of sponsorship.Ranu, who won medals at various national and international weight and powerlifting competitions, told a local television channel that she needs at least Rs.235,000 to make it to the championship.
“I had written to several private and government organisations seeking sponsorship, but did not get any response,” Mohanty told IANS.
“I have to deposit the money to the India powerlifting federation for dope test and travel by Tuesday. I sought three more days to try my luck,” she said.
“Having won many medals, I feel bad when,I feel as if I am begging,” she said.
“I have decided not to pursue the sport any longer if I don’t get sponsorship this time” said Ranu in a choking voice.
The 28-year-old native of Berhampur has bagged six gold medals, seven silver and one bronze medal in various international competitions, including world and Asian championships.
The World Championships will be held at St. John’s in Canada from Nov 2-7.
The Orissa Cricket Association has assured Rs.50,000, but it is inadequate, her coach Hariprasad Patnaik told IANS. “The state government has sanctioned only Rs 10,000,” he said.
