Ponting seething with anger over Oz batting flop in lost ODI series
June 29th, 2010 - 3:13 pm ICT by ANISydney, Jun 29 (ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is seething with anger and accused his batsmen of non performance, after arch-rivals England won the one-day series at Old Trafford.
Australia’s batsmen have been making low totals in the series, setting England respective targets of 268, 240 and 213.
In terms of Australia’s batting troubles, Ponting (three off 16 balls) and fellow veteran Mike Hussey (21 off 21) have been the biggest offenders of this tour.
“That sort of performance was a reasonable bowling performance, a poor batting performance again, and at the end of the day you look back and it’s happened in three games, so it’s a series gone,” Ponting said.
“What we have to do now is show a bit of pride in our performances in the last two games and try and salvage whatever we can out of the series,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.
Spinner Graeme Swann (4-37 off 10) and Lancashire seamer James Anderson (3-21 off eight) were England’s class acts on Sunday, but Ponting said the Australian batsmen had been under the pressure throughout the series.
“Those sort of things are always the result of pressure that’s built up on you. You’ve got to give England some credit for the way they’ve bowled through the series so far. They’ve executed really well. Their spinners today did a terrific job on a wicket that suited the slower bowlers.
“I thought [Mike] Yardy and [Graeme] Swann were both very good for them. That built pressure on our batters and we got out,” Ponting said. (ANI)
