Ponting had done enough to have say on his future as captain: Gilchrist

Melbourne, Mar 22 (ANI): Former wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has said that out of form captain Ricky Ponting has the right to have a say on his future as the skipper, inspite of the stiff opposition within the Cricket Australia boardroom over his continuance.

Ponting place in the squad as a player is not under threat, but he has reportedly fallen out with the CA hierarchy and may lose the captaincy.

Gilchrist said the 36-year-old had done enough to go out as captain or as a player on his own terms.

“Absolutely, he is our best batsman since Bradman - his record speaks for itself,” Gilchrist told AAP on Tuesday.

“I think he has earned that right to sit down and have discussions (with the CA board about his future) after the tournament,” he said.

While hinting that Ponting may contemplate handing over the one-day reins, Gilchrist drew parallels with Australia’s 1999 World Cup captain - Steve Waugh.

“If he is not going to the next World Cup it may well be time for everyone to sit down and work out the direction forward in the limited overs version. I don’t know what he is thinking, so I won’t speculate,” he said.

“But I do know that in 1999 when there were rumours that Steve Waugh was told he would lose the captaincy if we bowed out of that World Cup, he scored one of the great World Cup hundreds ever against South Africa and we went on to win the World Cup. Maybe this is the inspiration Ricky needs,” Gilchrist added. (ANI)
