Ponting doesn’t see too many gaping holes in team despite drubbing by India
October 14th, 2010 - 2:47 pm ICT by ANIBangalore, Oct 14(ANI): After Australia’s 2-0 Test series defeat against India, skipper Ricky Ponting insists that any problems magnified during the tour would be resolved in the one month left for the Ashes.
The Australian team is currently ranked fifth in the world, and is dealing with their longest Test-match losing streak for 22 years.
“The scoreline was pretty flattering for the India team so we have to look at the positives we’ve created over the last couple of weeks. In saying that, all any of us can do when we go back home is play the best cricket we can,” the Herald Sun quoted Ponting, as saying.
“I’ve got to make as many runs as I can as do the rest of the players in this current squad. Anyone who is out of this squad at the moment, if they keep scoring runs and keep putting their hands up, we’ll wait and see what happens when the selections come around for Brisbane.”
“I don’t think there are too many gaping holes in our team. We just have to take opportunities that come our way and not let, like we certainly did at Mohali, big opportunities slip,” he added.
He further backed struggling vice-captain Michael Clarke, who scored 35 runs in four innings in India, to do well against England.
“You don’t have to worry about Michael Clarke. We’ve all had those series in India. I had about four of them in a row where you come over here, try lots of different things, work hard and not get the results you want,” Ponting said.
“He’s a world-class player and I’m sure when the Ashes comes around, you’ll see him in good touch,” he added.
The first of the five Ashes Tests will be held at The Gabba in Brisbane from November 25 to 29.
It will be followed by Tests in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.
The tour also has two Twenty20 clashes and a seven-match ODI series. (ANI)
