Sydney, Jan 3 (ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes that his team has learnt from their first explosive encounter with Pakistan’s 19-year-old batting prodigy, Umar Akmal, and have taken note of some areas to exploit.

Peter Siddle allowed Umar Akmal to free his arms, but Ponting is confident it won’t happen again.

The plan to contain Umar during Sydney Test starting on Sunday presumably includes using the left-arm quicks to angle the ball across the Pakistani batsman, after he fell twice to edges procured by Mitchell Johnson during the Boxing Day Test.

In the first innings, though, Umar made a blistering 51 and took Siddle for 19 in one over, including three fours and a six over mid-wicket, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

“He is talented and he is dangerous. Both him and his brother (Kamran), you can see how dangerous they are and how much talent they have got. I picked up a few things last week in the way he plays that I think we can keep singling out to him, and making it difficult for him,” Ponting said.

The Australians are aware of Umar’s potential following his recent hundred on debut against New Zealand, but realise he does not like to be tied down.

“He showed in that one over from ‘Sids’ how dangerous he can be, but otherwise even at the start of the second innings I thought we had him under good wraps there,” Ponting said.

“He is the sort of player who likes to keep the game going forward and likes to score quickly, so generally those sort of players are going to offer you some chances. If we keep him under pressure and bowl in good areas to him then hopefully those chances will come our way,” he added. (ANI)
