Police chief praises World Cup security
July 11th, 2010 - 7:19 pm ICT by IANSJohannesburg, July 11 (DPA) South Africa’s national police commissioner Bheki Cele has praised the security operation in place at the 2010 football World Cup, saying his force had done an excellent job.
“If it was not for the South African security services, we would not have gone this far,” Cele said Sunday in Johannesburg.
Chele said the standards set during the World Cup would now have to be maintained.
“Make sure that when the visitors are gone, South Africans are safe. You need to maintain the squeeze on criminals’ space and finish their oxygen,” he emphasised.
Concerns had been raised before the tournament about the safety of fans travelling to South Africa for the World Cup but the feared wave of violent crime never materialised.
“I am not happy, I am flying. Happy is an understatement,” said Chele.
