Phelps scrapes into 400m individual medley final

London, July 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps scraped into the final of the men’s 400 metres individual medley of the London Games Saturday, qualifying last in eighth.
The American sneaked into the final by just seven hundredths of a second, more than three seconds behind timesheet topper Kosuke Hagino of Japan. Hagino posted an Asian record of 4 minutes, 10.01 seconds.
Phelps’ archrival and teammate Ryan Lochte qualified in third. The final in the Olympic Park Aquatics Centre is later Saturday.
