PCB issues notice to Afridi over his public remarks
May 9th, 2011 - 4:31 pm ICT by IANSKarachi, May 9 (IANS) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a showcause notice to ODI captain Shahid Afridi over his remarks on a reported feud with coach Waqar Younis.
“Pakistan Cricket Board has taken notice of the statements made by Mr. Shahid Afridi in the media about the differences within the tour management in West Indies. It is a violation of Code of Conduct on part of Mr.Afridi and an explanation has been sought from him for the reasons to make such statements publicly. PCB will take appropriate action after submission of the tour-report at the conclusion of the West Indies tour,” the board said in a statement issued Monday.
Afridi returned to Karachi from Guyana Sunday after leading Pakistan to a 3-2 victory against the West Indies in the One-day International (ODI) series last week.
The seasoned all-rounder told reporters that differences in the team management were not those “which could not be resolved, but everyone should do his job and need not interfere in other’s work”.
Afridi and Waqar are on a collision course after serious differences during the series.
Afridi, according to reports, is so displeased with the way the coach is running the team’s affairs that he has been planning to meet PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to express his grievances against Waqar. Sources close to Afridi revealed that the all-rounder is “considering his options” and will take a final decision after meeting Butt.
Waqar wants to be the one calling all the shots and that has really irked Afridi, said a source.
Waqar, a former Test pacer, is reportedly at loggerheads with chief selector Mohsin Khan.
Mohsin has been hinting that Waqar overrules the squads picked by the national selection committee.
Mohsin even threatened to resign after his recommendations were overruled by the PCB while announcing Pakistan’s 15-man Test squad for this month’s series against the West Indies.
In the Caribbean last week, Afridi’s relations with Waqar almost reached breaking point when the coach insisted that he will pick the playing elevens. Afridi mulled over the option of missing the last two ODIs but was later convinced by other team officials to carry on.
