PCB decides not to send any selector with the team on foreign toursApril 14th, 2008 - 4:04 pm ICT by admin
Lahore, Apr 14 (ANI): Following last years spat between selector Salahuddin Ahmed and team management during India tour over sending Abdur Rauf or Rao Iftikhar to replace injured Umar Gul, the PCB is learnt to have decided not to send any selector with the Pakistan cricket team on foreign tours.
Instead, they will be asked to coordinate with the team management over selection matters from home.
During the Indo-Pak series last year, the team management had asked for Abdur Rauf as back up to injured Umer Gul. But the PCB instead sent Rao Iftikhar when all the arrangements to send Rauf were final. Even he was given visa to travel to India. But the PCB have a change of mind at the last moment and sent Rao. When the bowler asked a PCB official for a change of mind, he was told “you are misbehaving. We are here to do whatever we want”.
A board official confirmed that after the fiasco resulting from the dispute between chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed and the team management comprising coach Geoff Lawson and captain Shoaib Malik in India over the replacement players, the PCB had decided against sending selectors on foreign tours with the team.
Till the recent past, the board policy was to send one selector on a foreign tour and he used to give his inputs in the team meetings on selection of players. Salahuddin did this job in India. But now the policy has been changed, The Nation quoted the PCB as saying.
He added: Under the new policy, the board has decided that no member of the senior or junior selection committee will go on foreign tours and the tour selection committee will be responsible for all selections.
The selectors would coordinate with the team management on replacement players from home but the final decision would rest with the team manager and captain, the source further said. (ANI)
