PCB boss Butt on collision course with govt. over board constitution
April 8th, 2010 - 3:09 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, Apr.8 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt could well be on track for yet another controversy, as he has suggested some ‘drastic’ amendments in the board’s constitutional draft despite the government already agreeing upon the ‘democratic’ draft constitution.
According to sources privy to developments in the PCB, the board has written a letter to its patron, President Asif Ali Zardari, which says that the proposed draft constitution is not fully in line with discussions held between the board officials and the sports ministry.
“The provisions of the proposed draft constitution are extremely detrimental to the structure of the PCB,” sources quoted the letter, as saying.
The proposed suggestions in the draft constitution of the PCB forwarded to the President mainly mention points that ask for curtailing the powers of the federal government and giving more powers to the patron.
“The powers of framing rules and regulation should stay with the board otherwise it will be against the spirit of the sports. The chairman shall work under the patron’s to maintain proper chain of command,” the PCB’s letter said.
“Ministry has no role in operational matters of the board and their input may result in undue delay and board should independently constitute its committees for contracts, bidding etc without the involvement of the Sports Ministry,” sources quoted the letter further.
The PCB has also challenged the powers of Executive Council (EC) for the selection of the national squad, The Dawn reports. (ANI)
