Pakistans only tennis stadium being used for holding marriagesDecember 25th, 2008 - 12:23 pm ICT by ANI
Karachi, Dec.25 (ANI): Tennis in Pakistan is obviously not as popular as cricket or hockey which can be judged by the fact that the only tennis stadium of the country is used for holding marriage ceremonies and other functions.
Local tennis coaches and players are furious about the condition of the sport but remain a mere spectator of the situation. Governments apathy and stubborn policies towards one of the famous sport of the world has made the situation only worse.
Karachi’’s CDGK Complex, having a capacity of 5,000 spectators is now being used for holding functions and marriages.
Apart from the tennis stadium, there are other four tennis courts which are frequented by the members. CDGK Complex also has facilities of roller skating, basketball, swimming, and netball. But all remains neglected as no major event has been hosted by the stadium in recent times.
The staff and members are desperately trying to maintain the facilities here. They have been forced to give the courts free of cost to hold an event. “The present staff is trying to uplift the potential of the complex. The swimming pool has been bettered and the four tennis courts have been painted. They give their courts to us free of cost to hold tennis tournaments there, The Regional Times quoted secretary of Sindh Tennis Association (STA) Khalid Rehmani, as saying.
“The complex has such a big lawn area. That should be availed for holding tennis competitions instead of wasting the facility by holding marriage ceremonies,” the paper quoted a local coach, as saying. (ANI)
